Kazam screencaster on Ubuntu 12.10

I have recently revisited the Kazam screen-caster tool on Ubuntu 12.10. I have tried it before but found it unreliable and not as featured as commercial software I use. The latest release, although listed as unstable, works well for me and I have now been using fairly solidly for the last two weeks on my laptop.

Firstly being unstable we will have to add the repository in:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kazam-team/unstable-series
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kazam

If you were not aware, this command will also add in a sources to the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ So the change is permanent.

With Kazam installed we can add it to our launcher but make sure you set the preferences:

Make sure that the screencaster video format is set to MP4 from the default AVI, the size difference is immense and it is really worthwhile switching to MP4. All the video’s I have uploaded to YouTube since 2009 have been MP4. In this latest version you can choose to record a window or the full screen. We demonstrate recording a terminal window.
