Upgrading Ubuntu Server from the Command Line

With Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Server now available, the 20th Ubuntu Linux release, we look at upgrading our existing LTS server to Trusty from Precise.  To upgrade Ubuntu Server from the command line there are several methods; we will look at the preferred Ubuntu method using do-release-upgrade. The typical method on Debian based systems is apt-get dist-upgrade but Ubuntu have been in specific methods to handle configuration changes in their method.

ubuntyThe upgrade command can be used on its own as:

sudo do-release-upgrade

or, as will we use as 14.04 is still quite new with the -d option to search for development releases
